My Very Own Blog

2 minute read

Here comes the obligatory first blog post - hang in there with me. My name is Andrew Wickham. I am a dad, husband, database administrator, marathoner, tech enthusiast, baseball fan, DIYer, and now apparently a blogger. The goal of this blog is to share my day to day learnings - mainly in Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft PowerShell, but others may be sprinkled in there along the way.

One of the things that I struggle with the most is trudging through reading a lengthy blog article in order to get the end result. With that in mind, every one of my posts will have a TLDR (too long, didn’t read) right up front for those of you that are in the same boat as me.

TLDR

My name is Andrew Wickham. This is my blog about my learnings in Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft PowerShell. I’m writing this blog to better document what I’ve learned, force myself to dig deeper on the topics, and to share with the amazing tech community.

My History

I was born in 1987, so I would consider myself a computer native. I have had them and used them ever since I can remember. My parents joke that the only way I could learn my telephone number was through a computer game - probably pretty common now, but maybe not so much in the early 90s. My first coding book was a Perl book my mom got me for my twelfth birthday. From there, my interests turned to PHP and MySQL. One of the things that always interested me was databases. Tables, foreign keys, normalizing data models… so much fun.

I started working for my school district when I was a junior in high school. Over the summer I would help image/deploy computers. They liked me, so they kept me on the payroll. The next year I was able to get into developing some software and managing servers and databases. Again, I found that databases really brought out the nerd in me. I worked at the school district while I got my bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a specialization in Database Management from DeVry University - this let me keep working full time while furthering my education. Once graduated, I got my first career position as a database administrator. Fast forward 8.5 years and here I am wanting to further my career by sharing my day-to-day learnings.

This Blog

Like I mentioned earlier, the goal of this blog is to share my day-to-day learnings in technology. I mainly work with SQL Server and PowerShell, so those are primarily what the posts will be about. I wouldn’t be surprised if some Windows Server, virtualization, and Azure posts make their way in here though. I will be trying to publish a weekly article on Tuesdays and since I’m a baseball fan most of the samples will probably be baseball themed if that’s your thing.

That’s enough of the painful intro. Stay tuned for post #2, which will be on how to use SQL Server 2016’s Managed Backups to automatically backup SQL Server databases to Azure Blog Storage.
